What to root for in the last weeks of the season?

I hate people who root against something… publicly. You know the guy/gal, they’re the Chelsea supporter who comes in to watch Arsenal v. Bolton and roots for Bolton. I mean, who could possibly root for Bolton? You’d have to be a massive c*nt to root for Bolton and an even bigger c*nt to be a Chelsea supporter publicly rooting for Bolton because you hate Arsenal. That’s something you do in private.

So, in honor of that I want to give you some things that you can root for as the season winds down, rather than just rooting against ManU and Chelsea.

1. Everton v. Chelsea — FA Cup Final

I like Everton, they play hard but fair. I also like what David Moyes has done with that team. Arsenal supporters often have to say “well, Arsenal don’t have the same budget as the top four teams and yet we still compete.” If that’s true about Arsenal, that’s even truer for Everton.

But moreover, Everton’s season was decimated by injury and kicked off even worse than Arsenal’s season — losing to Rovers and Pompey in their first three games. But Moyes stayed the course, bolstered his team, and pulled them from the ashes. Moyes’ belief and coaching acumen has pretty much guaranteed European football next year and that’s something worth rooting for right there.

Besides which, when Everton beat Chelsea it will mean that Chelsea have won exactly the same number of trophies as Arsenal over the last two years; zero. Not that I’m rooting against them or anything… the c*nts.

2. Barcelona v. Man U — Champions League Final

This one is easy, I’m rooting for Thierry Henry to win the Champions League. It’s the only medal he has left to collect and this is probably his last real chance to win. Besides, I like the way that Barcelona play, it’s very Arsenal-esque. Arsenal-esque, but more experienced, which everyone says is what Arsenal need to win a trophy, right? So, we have to root for Barca, they are what we all expect Arsenal to be next season, hell, they even wear yellow.

Besides which, when Barcelona beat Man U for the Champions League title it will prevent them from doing the unbearable; back-to-back Champions League trophies. Which we’d have to hear about for about a f*cking century. Not that I’m rooting against them or anything… the c*nts.

3. Liverpool to win the Premier League

This is going to be a tough one for them, but I think they can do it, especially if Arsenal win out. I will say that I really like most Liverpool fans. There is no group of longer suffering, more dedicated, more loyal supporters than Liverpool supporters. Ok, well, maybe Everton and Newcastle supporters have had it a bit worse, but Liverpool.. erm… Liverpool deserve to win the title again, it’s their birthright!

Besides, wouldn’t it be delicious irony if Liverpool were to win the title, with the help of Arsenal beating Chelsea and Man U, on the 20th anniversary of the season that Arsenal nipped the title from them?

Oh yeah, not to mention that I predicted they would win the title.

Oh yeah, and if Barca win the Champions League and Liverpool win the Premier League then Man U will have won just one trophy this season: the Carling Cup. Not that I’m rooting against them or anything… the c*nts.

4. Arsenal for 3rd place

This is obvious, 3rd place means automatic qualification into the group stages of the Champions League and 4th place means we have an open qualification to get into the group stages. Open qualification means we could face, say, Roma in a one-off home and away, right there at the start of the season. So, 3rd place means something to us and we can start by beating Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday.

Besides, if Arsenal top Chelsea in the league and Chelsea lose the FA Cup final it would mean that Arsenal and Chelsea won the exact same number of trophies for two years straight (ZERO) and Arsenal but did so by keeping the same coach, not spending £500m, and not being a hideous pack of ref threatening crybaby c*nts. Not that I’m rooting against them or anything… the c*nts.

UPDATE: Or How Could I have Been So Stupid And Missed This???

If we win out we will be 24 unbeaten in the league and perfectly set to jump into next season with a great unbeaten run.  And to think, I moaned when Sunderland held us to 0-0 draw!

    Well said.

    *applause*

So I was driving back from cricket practice last night (it’s like baseball with less spitting :) and I had to stop the car in a hurry when Barca scored as I couldn’t quite believe it. Oh, and that I was laughing so much. Serves them bloody well right.

    So:

    1) Everton can do it, but I think Chelsea will lock the gates and it will go to penalties. From then, who knows – Everton have done it once already.

    2) Barca can also do it, but they are well short at the back and United will exploit that. But I’d like to see Thierry win it for them. Could be a high scoring game…

    3) With United’s eyes on the big prize, there is potential for them to slip up in the League, but I can’ t see it. At best a loss to us and maybe a draw with someone else, but that won’t be enough. Sorry, Scousers.

    4) Beat Chelsea and it’s still on, but I am equally sceptical of them dropping points in either of their other two matches – Blackburn and Sunderland. Admittedly those clubs are fighting for survival but they’re also shit.

Still, looking forward to the next few weeks!

Nice post, except I disagree with Liverpool winning the league. I have friends that are Liverpool fans and no matter how well Arsenal have done I’ve always had that 18 league titles thing thrown in my face. It’s a source of arrogance for the Liverpool fans I know and I’d really like it to be gone. So this season I’d like to see Man Utd (yeah I hate that idea) win the league just so it takes the sting out of that issue.

I would however be satisfied if it was a loss to Arsenal that lost Man Utd the title.

Here’s an article you guys might find interesting, it’s the first balanced, realistic and optimistic look at where Arsenal can go from here. Ignore the title.

For anyone looking for a laugh, here’s a video of Drogba’s f**king disgraceful language and a very funny gif of Ballack running after the ref, enjoy lol.

While there is LIFE, there is HOPE.

While our hopes may be in vain, it still gives us something to root for, rather than merely playing out an uninteresting 3 weeks.

    @Fourstar

I think Cricket is catching up to baseball with the spitting, especially the pace bowlers and seamers when they are trying to add a little polish to the ball. (lol)

@caribkid: Fair point! But not in our polite amateur Sunday league in South London though, we’re very genteel (except in the bar after the game :)

  9. May 7, 2009 at 9:06 am

Im goin to root for no more excuses, less injuries, a new aproach from wenger & a burning desire from players to try &make up for all the hurt over the last few yrs-ala Livpool C/L 2nd leg 3-1 down or man u who dam sure wer’nt goin to mis the final!

Brilliant article, if all those things happen (however unlikely) then this season won’t seem so bad

I pretty much agree with everything here. Hate Chelsea and I think Moyes has done enough to deserve some fortune at Everton. Man Utd have some of the worse fans I’ve come to know – pretentious pricks I tell you. I hope Barca win the CL and Liverpool for the Prem. Liverpool fans won’t gloat but be gracious winners, whereas Mancs just spew garbage all year long and I’d love to laugh at their quintuple turn into a “double” that no one cares about. I mean are we really counting the Carling Cup and Club World Championship? We might as well add the Charity Shield, Amsterdam Tournament and the Peace Cup. Arsenal for 3rd would mean our players get more rest and be that much more refreshed for the new season that I hope we can win. Please Arsene bring in those special players we need to boost the team.

I subscribe to all of the above, plus

a very lengthy ban for Dogbreath, sorry Drogba, and Ronaldo (El Horizonte) sent off in the Champ.L.Final for persistent simulation.

Hell! what is is schadenfreude if you can’t revel in it once in awhile!

    Viva!

I became a Liverpool man in 1995 and have never seen us hold the title. It would bring me much joy to see this happen, but more pain if Man U were to raise yet another. If we do not finish at the top make us 4th. We will make CL next year and take charge at yet another European Cup -I WANT MY LEAGUE TITLE!

  15. May 7, 2009 at 3:01 pm

I want some of whatever Russ has been drinking.

  16. May 7, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Russ is likely drinking Jameson’s as his is the publican of the oft mentioned and much loved Doyle’s Public House here in Tacoma.

I just watched both UEFA semi-final second legs (hey, I am unemployed, cut me some slack).

    Two observations:

    1. Max Bretos is the worst sports announcer. Ever. If he does even one CL match next season I will throw my tv out the window.
    2. More importantly, Arsenal could have thrashed all over of the semi-final teams. In other words, if we had finished fifth this season, we would have, more than likely, won the first Europa League. Silverware is silverware.

We and Barca play Arsenal-esque, but Barca are more experienced! we really must move to challenge for the most Arsenal-esque in the world. We need a Barca-esque purge, we got to afload players like Silveste, Djaroue, Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner, Ade and go for mature expericed players. 3 mean and tall old fashioned Terry like defenders, lots of good defenders on the championship and others to be relegated to bargain for. We need an experienced goalkeeper for some 2 years as Fabianski develops, We need 3 midfielders, 4 strikers. We can race for people like Diego Ribas da Cunha of Werder Bremen, we were once linked to this Cantona like match winner, now i hear Jive have his signature foe 20M. I would not mind him or Arshevin taking from Ade while the other joins Fabrigas midfield. We can raid Valencia and take away Villa. We can get our reign on the and we are early in the market as our season is over already while others are bitting their nails.
